Small Heath Yacht Club was founded
by a group of folks (probably hippies) on the small Greek
island of Alonissos in 1990. Their common interest of
drinking & sailing got them into all sorts of saft
conversation. The crux of it was that, as they were all
from land locked Birmingham they needed a Yacht club located
somewhere that there could never ever be one. And hence
SHYC was conceived. Whilst some of you that don’t
do BOATS may think, 'what's the point' .I must tell you
one of the most gratifying things is to be seen wearing
an SHYC logo by an Ex-Brummie/Ex-Pat whilst on Holiday,
they will come and hug and kiss you and buy your beer
and be totally amazed when you tell them that, due to
global warming, Small Heath is now submerged under a lake
(a bit like Windermere). And that's where the clubhouse
is. |
Sadly most of the Members
have left the salubrious surroundings of the Small Heath
area and now live in a wretched part of the west midlands
know as "Redditch on Sea" and often rub shoulders
with the intellectually depraved "Bromsgrove Boaters"
these are just people that don't laugh or drink enough
to join the SHYC and spend most of their weekends stuck
in some lonely creek on the south coast of England,
still perhaps it's better than Redditch.
Honorary membership of the SHYC is gained
by the purchase, of and most importantly the wearing
of the club’s attire. By joining you accept the
obligations of promoting the ideals of the club, which
by virtue are the core values of is existence, Sailing
with friends and good company, moderate drinking but
no to forget the mandatory, OCA, Oh Christ Ahh!!! when
someone suggests a beer. |
